O Clio Awards e considerado um dos mais famosos prêmios da publicidade internacional. Criado em 1959 por Wallace A. Ross, ele reconhece a excelência criativa no campo da propaganda.
A partir de 1965, o evento, antes restrito ao mercado norte-americano, começou a avaliar trabalhos internacionais.
Em 1972, Bill Evans adquire direitos sobre o festival, construindo o status da competição até o final dos anos 80.
Em 1991, o Clio Awards passa para as mãos de Ruth Ratny, publisher da Screen Magazine, de Chicago, sendo por ela revendido no ano seguinte a Jim Smyth.
Em 1997, Smyth negocia o prêmio junto a BPI Communications em Nova Iorque, uma subsidiária do conglomerado de mídia e pesquisa alemão VNU.
O evento engloba palestras, exposições dos trabalhos concorrentes nas categorias TV, mídia impressa, outdoor, rádio, mídia integrada, design, internet e trabalho estudantil.
Neste ano ele será realizado no dia 28 de setembro no American Museum of Natural History – New York City.
